Savant: Tape Machine

So musical mastermind and all round genius Aleksander Vinter has got another album coming out under his electro-house/dubstep Savant moniker, as helpfully stated in the picture releasing on the last repeating date we'll ever live to see (12/12/12)
So far we've seen 3 tracks on youtube, but the pick of the bunch is on soundcloud, this electro banger: Tape Machine.

The Genre Clash - Mombahton vs Glitch-Hop

Left: Diplo, Mombahton puveyor. Right: Koan Sound, Glitch Hop providers. You get the impression none of them could care less...

So this is the mid-tempo clash, on the one hand you have the smooth blissed out rythms of Mombahton, on the other the in your face and bassy beats of Glitch-Hop. As ever, we'll be looking at the 3 main factors: general style, best artists and popularity before the verdict. (And of course sharing two typical tracks from both genres.)

General Style: Mombahton. Around about 108 bpm, with dutch synths and Reggaeton rhythms, and generally some kind of bongo thing going on. Its quite hard to define mombahton because there's kind of two camps, one more reggae and one more dutch.
General Style: Glitch Hop. Slightly faster at 110 bpm, taking more cues than electro house and dnb basses than the hip hop in its name. Its all about the drop here, based around a reese style wobble and added levels of complexity. NB that glitch-hop drops tend to be a tad more melodic than say dubstep, especially if done by Koan Sound. (I'm not really talking old style, more the  new sound.)

Best Artists: Mombahton. Diplo, Major Lazer, Dave Nada, Afrojack, Knife Party.

Best Artists: Glitch-Hop. Not as well populated, mainly done by Koan Sound, The Glitch Mob and Skrillex from time to time.

Popularity: Hard to define purely because of the higher quantity of mombahton than Glitch Hop, but the higher popularity of Skrillex and Koan Sound on the glitchier side of things. I'm going 7 for both.

The Verdict:
There is a 45% chance you skipped straight here, you unappreciative sod but there is nought I can do so instead I will say this: Though Diplo and co are very talented, we might as well bow down to Koan Sound as supreme overlords. Glitch Hop  are the victors this week.

Define Indie...

Indie, depending on who you ask is either another name for New Wave, a modern take on rock and roll by the likes of Arctic Monkeys, or anything that is "so cool I bet you haven't heard of it". It could mean rock, folk, even certain spectrums of dance or EDM. So, what is it?

I would define indie as the Arctic Monkeys/Ok Go/Vaccines style of music, purely because that is the "indie" genre, not a tag along with something (indie-dance, indie-folk etc.) So let it be known that anyone saying how indie they are deserved to be drowned in the mainstream they so detest. Yep, I said it. (We don't like Youtubes here at The Fresh Club, but SoundCloud doesn't have this beast of a tune)

Knife party Mix: Clever Title Like Deadmau5 Would Use

Australian dubstep/electro maestros Knife Party just dropped their new mix for Mixmag Magazine. Opening with an interesting VIP remix of their track Rage Valley, it just keeps on going, with a witty name to match. Check it OUT!

Kairo Kingdom - Fantom E.P

Kairo Kingdom, the Berlin Bass badboys with a penchant for glitch-hop madness and atrocious spelling. They just dropped their new E.P on Beatport, and while not their best work, its still proper tunes to rock out to.

Porter Robinson and Mat Zo - Easy

A straight up banger of an electro house tune here from Language creator Robinson and his new protege Mat Zo, this is a rip from a radio show (so the soundcloud is link is unnoficial but whatever) with a released date unconfirmed as yet. But when it is released, expect it to be massive, and you can say you heard it here first.

The Wednesday top 10: 90's tunes.

Another Wednesday top ten, this time going back a few decades to the 90's. Often described as a decade that music forgot, its actually got quite a bad press. here's ten reasons why.

10: Daft Punk-Da Funk. A classic 90's house tune, with that kind of melody that you struggle to get out of your head for a while.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmi60Bd4jSs

9: Beastie Boys-Intergalactic. Hip Hop done properly, with the connoisseurs of  cool  blending cool vocoders and funky beats. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nrbc_0Pf10Q

8: Utah Saints-Something Good. Another piece of dance music (yes I'll get to the britpop/grunge later) in that kind of massive stadium sound typical of the Bradford based duo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUxhNWDlGts

7: Loser-Beck. Beck, everyone's favourite Scientologist using his potential for non-phrases, including the wonderful "spraypaint the vegetables". Check it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgSPaXgAdzE

6: Zombie Nation-Kernkraft 400. Yet more dance music, this time from German electro duo Zombie Nation. Another one for the melody, somehow entirely programmed on an akai MPC. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5LW07FTJbI

5: Oasis-Wonderwall. What, only 5th? It's fifth because there's a better Oasis song on this list, but this is still a classic. The bread and butter of crap guitar players everywhere, this is the kind of song for a karaoke at a wedding. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hzrDeceEKc

4: Tupac-California Love. By the late nineties hip hop began to lose something, the rise of RnB, big money producers and the Biggie/Tupac gang war had taken its toll on the genre. Not on this tune though, the 2nd in the list to feature a vocoder, and the last hip hop track on the list. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWbXQQG9B6c

3: Oasis-Rock n Roll Star. Here's the other Oasis track I promised, a proper good old fashioned rock tune, no more, no less. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmBvdIIQXYU

2:Nirvana-Smells Like Teen Spirit. You knew it would be on here, of course it would be. The soundtrack to dissafected youth following Thatcher and however was in charge in America, who felt the need to get at the establishment that was doing nothing for them. (I could go on about the socio-politics of this track but I have a social life) Basically, if you haven't listened to it then listen to it. If you have listen to it again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTWKbfoikeg

1: Blur Song 2. Is it what you expected? Probably not. Is it an amazing tune? Yes it is. Is it number 1 this week? Ditto. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSbBvKaM6sk

Viceroy- While we're in Love

A lovely bit of hands in the air, unashamedly happy synth pop here from the new darlings of the US West Coast Electro-pop scene: Viceroy, with a briliant catchy Moog bassline and upbeat lyrics, this is the perfect tune to soothe the winter blues.

The Genre Clash: DnB vs Dubstep.

NERO: Badass Mofos and dubstep representatives          VS  Matrix and Futurebound, Baddas Mofos and DnB fighters.
In yet another serial post thing (I really need to get round to continuing the other ones) It's the battle of the genres as the two British based powerhouses take each other in in the battle of the bass. For this, and for every ensuing fight, we'll be asking three questions: General Style, Best Artists and Popularity. Then I'll decide the winner, and if you want you can complain in the comments section...

General Style: Dubstep. Half Time 140 bpm breaks, with that all important wobble bass and the occasional big melodic supersaw thing. Classic example: Knife Party- Centipede

General Style:  DnB. 175 bpm full time breakbeats, sometimes a Reece kinda bass, sometimes more pinching off other genres styles: ie the Dubstep Wobble, Dutch synths or electro basses. Classic Example: DJ Fresh-Gold Dust

Best Artists: Dubstep. Doctor P, Flux Pavillion, Skrillex, Nero

Best Artists: DnB: Andy C, DJ Fresh, Rudimental, Matrix and Futurebound, Pendulum

Popularity: Dubstep: Not as big as it was: 60%

Popularity: DnB: Literally the sound of now, 3 no 1 tracks in a few months: 80%.

The Verdict
Dubstep is officialy dead since Skrillex killed it, rising out of the ashes is new wave Drum 'n Bass, the victors today.

Savant: Starfish

A fresh slice of that fresh new genre pioneered by the likes of KOAN Sound and The Glitch Mob, Starfish is one epic glitch hop tune, a more melodic contrast form the mostly dubstep influenced tracks in the genre.

Check it out, and the rest of his 3 full length albums he's produced this year (!) with one more out soon

What Happened to Hip Hop?

This is a question many people ask, generally at dinner parties, or winging on facebook about the "golden age". People talk about Run DMC, Biggie Smalls, Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, then compare them with Chris Brown, Wiz Khalifa, Nicki Minaj et all and a little tear goes from their eye. The question is, what happened?

Let's start at around 2000, when Hip Hop was run by 3 people: Timbaland and The Neptunes. These two super producer line-ups made every single hit at the time. They were good at what they did, but what was interesting was the style of music they made on their popularity. Basically, what they made was quite similar to pop music before them, (though still broadly hip hop). Also, absolutely everything with their name on it became ridiculously popular. This can be considered the time when hip hop became pop and vice versa.

This is important because of what record labels think. When a genre becomes popular, BOOM, hundreds of wannabes with record label money behind them. And, surprise surprise, they became successful. So we can basically say, that hip hop "sold out" and became broadly rubbish at about 2003. However, there is still good artists out there: you just need to know where to look. (In all honesty, I am far from the best person to know about good new hip-hop, so not a lot I can do for you there.)

And that, my friends, is that. What happened to hip hop is some very good producers became too successful. I am terrified of this happening to Dance music, but its not looking good. So, remember kids, its not cool to be cool.
Its all your fault.

The Wednesday Top 10: EDM Tracks.

Friends, Romans, Countrymen, keep you ears on and learn to appreciate them. Every Wednesday I will attempt to soften the mid week blues with a top ten of something musicish. (As for now musicish is a word, no arguments.) This week I'm starting off simple, with a list of the music that I am frankly most familiar, Electronic Dance. I am slightly ashamed of myself for calling it EDM but y'now, that's the done thing nowadaws... (yes, most of these are radio edits, not extended mixes.)

10: Knife Party: Bonfire. Don't believe the negative hype surrounding Knife Party. These guys are one of the few reasons Australia isn't cut off from the rest of the world. That and Koalas. This is one serious Reggae-Inspired Dubstep tune. (Yes its technivally Drumstep but read the article about subgenres...) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-IWRmpefzE

9: Madeon: Finale. I would have put Icarus just for the drop, but in my book Finale is the more rounded tune. The second piece of what is technically Drumstep (Half Time DnB) Its the Melody that makes this one stand out for the French Wunderkind. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0h2u87JwyA

8: Zedd: Spectrum. Progressive House in the house! Definitely a break from Zedd's normal work, this is one catchy tune, filled with trance chords and electro drops. Interestingly the vocal is actually a man, (though you wouldn't believe ithttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEp9MCQlAa4

7: Eric Prydz, Niton. This is how progressive house is. This is how it shall be forever, providing the legend that is Eric Prydz goes on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sUW2TXfOwg

6: Feed Me: Grand Theft Ectasy. There's, catchy, and then there is this. This is probably infectious, and potentially deadly. Unless armed to rave, stay away... Cheesy taglines aside, this is one hell of an electro-house tunehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UiMrCphoMY

5: Wolfgang Gartner: Illmerica. The formant lead to end all formant leads. Simple, end ofhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgBKuPG4KZs

4: Tiesto: Maximal Crazy. Tiesto, that trance DJ that could divide families on the opinions of "shite" and "I worship him". Post 2010, there is now one opinion: "Epic." Enter Maximal Crazy, the catchy, amazing slice of awesomenesshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AxI4rxCf2E

3: Swedish House Mafia: One. By now we're getting into the super-tunes. The arena-filling mega bangers. I haven't heard this track, you have not breathed oxygen in the last 10 yearshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1EOGzzLy8U

2: Mord Fustang: Windwaker. Massive electro house! A big melody and a gargantuan dropped, all produced so immaculately it probably causes kittens to cry of joy, probably. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KobbM94mXbo

1: Porter Robinson: Unison.  Here we are, no 1, and all necause it is THE best melody in the history of dance music. Do not argue, this is not a democracy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_J3WWYp8Gc

RnB/New Wave done properly: The Hotelles

I know what is going through your head, RnB is a crap genre full of people that want to rap but can't. I 100% agree with you, and am not talking about that kind of RnB. I'm talking about rhythm 'n blues, the indie, funky rock pioneered by the Who and the Beach Boys. The music that you listen to on the radio, and imagine yourself in a Mustang with Ray Bans on... Kind of.

The band in question is the Hotelles, a young three-piece from Kent, UK. When I say young, I mean the youngest member is just 14. But don't let that trick you into thinking their a "kiddy" band, because they're not. Their sound echoes the Drums, the Libertines and The Vaccines in that kind of life-affirming Rythm 'n Blues/New Wave style.

They recently released a single: Aviators on iTunes, along with two b-sides, close to tears and Ruins. all three are solid tracks, led by Funky guitars and a high pitched, throaty lead vocal.

Sub-Genres, and what to do about them.

Every couple of days my post won't be about a specific artist, but a post about music in general, maybe a genre overview or a musing on how Dubstep is similar to late Baroque (it isn't). Today I'll be talking about the ridiculousness that is sub-genres.

I know what you're thinking "sub genres make it easier to know what type of music it is". But that's because you're thinking too macro. Im thinking about the post-step breakcore, the dark mombahops, the nu-Indie Souls. This is why its so hard to find good music, because its also tucked away in little boxes labelled "No one cares but I'm going to sound arty."
My friends, it is bloggers like me that are at fault. We have changed the "ambient" to the "chillwave" the "progressive rock" to the "nu skool semi grime." We must end this, and end this now.

Here is a list of all the genres that are acceptable to use, ablly provided by the wonders of the internet (musicgenresforyou.com)
. For reasons I don't know they've included a genre called Grindcore, which I doubt anybody in the universe knows what it is.
That is all, no more, no less, (nb  you may see me using more specific subgenres in my speciality: dance music, but that is all, putting "nu" in front of anything means you should be slapped in front of your avant garde friends.

Albums that everyone should listen to but not enough have no1: All Eyes on Mord Fustang

Mord Fustang is an Estonian Electro-House producer with an eye for melody and massive drops. He's been steadily releasing track after track on Beatport, to brilliant response. Let's be honest though, he deserves way, way more credit. His first album is really a compilation of most of his work, from the massive Windwaker through to the more understated We Are Now Connected.

Heres his soundcloud page, where you can find short snippets of all his work: http://soundcloud.com/mordfustang

And here is the album download link on iTunes:
https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/all-eyes-on-mord-fustang/id537025807

people get buying, this guy's gonna be massive in the future.

Music etc.

Hi, by now you may be wondering why I've even bothered with a new music blog, seeing how saturated the internet already is with them, but I thought that Music Blogs have changed in the last couple of years, and I want to set them back on the right path. (Arrogant I know.)

I will not sell out. I will not pander to current trends. I will post good music, sent by you or discovered by me.
